Understanding desalination
When Manorama reports something, it is expected to be spicy and that is why we read "Creating History" more often. The Hindu says its 44km off the cost. So is Manorama just below the picture, but could not resist adding another 4km while reporting. While the cost of the water produced at 3-4 Paise/L is acceptable Rs 5/L is highly unrealistic. Why worry about drawing water from 500m deep while surface water is available? answer: the deep cold water is used for condensing the water vapour generated from the warm water (presently surface water and the plan is to use water from thermal power plant)
Count down
Above Edison
If anybody asks me who is a better inventor than Edison, I would say D.Vijayamohan..
Incandescent bulbs contribute global warming, everyone agree.
see the wonderful reasoning "Bulbs heat rapidly and release Carbon Dioxide"!! an inventor emerges.
(read the fact given in The Hindu)
other reasons for banning the bulb..
1) uses 20% less energy (CFL maker Philips says up to 80%)
2) life is 10,000 Hrs (Philips is modest. claims only 6,000 Hrs)
Manorama shows a cartoon that takes 80% of the news space..crime.

You think the high velocity particles of a tire burst are the direct cause of people getting hurt...

Bangalore airshow
I wonder why my regional news papers are finding it difficult to report anything technical accurately. More often the reporters are getting excited too much and carried away.
Here is a report on Bangalore airshow 2007 by Mathrubhoomi. It says F-16 has never gone outside the US. In fact it is the most widely used fighter plane through out the world (24 airforces apart from the USAF).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-16
He goes on saying Boeing has brought two F16s (Wikipedia says its been manufactured by General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin)
other great findings of this report follows
(Fact: The Saab JAS 39 "Gripen" (Griffin or "Gryphon") is a fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab)

Chinook is having 2 propellers
(Read it as 2 rotors)
Chinook can lift 5 Gypsies
(He means 5 cars)
There'r two main shows one is by Indian airforce's "nedum thoonukal" and other one is by planes like Sukhoy Jaguar and Mig.
(Dont get confused these planes are IAF's mainstay)

LCA is Light Compact Aircraft or Light Combat Aircraft?
Suyra Kiranukal or Surya Kiranangal?

U(C)AV
India is making unmanned plane good, but go on and you find a "combat/fighter" word creeps in. Confused between UCAV and UAV. (good that english expansion is given)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCAV
The Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) or "combat drones" is the name of a new class of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). They differ from ordinary UAVs, because they are designed to deliver weapons (attack targets) – possibly with a great degree of autonomy.
